A personal community service experience
This experience has helped me to further understand the gap of opportunity that plagues many of the inner city communities. I was inspired to help pave the way for other young people to join the National Service movement. I have since worked in various recruitment roles that focus on recruiting and recruiting young people from different backgrounds. “As a result, I learned a lot from my community service at my local museum and I hope to continue volunteering and learn more about history.”
You can focus on your personal development or how your community has benefited. Some colleges require students to write community service essays as part of their application or to be eligible for certain scholarships. In the past, I have been involved in many important community service activities through the Milford Young Women Club, a volunteer organization. We have visited nursing homes, cooked meals in shelters, planned environmental projects and much more.
Start with your essay
However, one of my favorite ways to get back is through a community service program I started two years ago. This upcoming holiday season will be the third year in a row that I am organizing a holiday to make holiday cards. My friends and I make hundreds of greeting cards to send to seniors living in nursing homes. So far, I have sent over five hundred cards and I intend to increase the project every year. We write heartfelt messages, decorate happy envelopes and last year we started adding small gifts to cards, such as paper snowflakes or small craft decorations. While we work, we also enjoy a lot of homemade cookies and drink hot cocoa to elevate the festive spirit. The event is always fun and as we work together, we achieve a lot.
Remember, community service is about difference, so be sure to show how you and your team have contributed to a worthwhile cause. Once again, I found myself looking for a culture that promoted change and community building. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join the staff of City Year, an AmeriCorps partner who helped spark my passion for service. I first took on the role of program director while working in Los Angeles’ Baton Rouge, a public school, piloting an innovative program called Diploma Now focused on tackling the high school dropout crisis.
What does the Community Service Essay

Once you have described your community service and given specific examples of your work, you want to start filling out your essay stating your achievements. Make sure the impact of your work is clear. do not worry to brag here. The way you design your essay will depend on the requirements of the scholarship or the school where you are applying. You can give a summary of all the work you have done as a volunteer or highlight a very memorable experience.
